Eater Hong Kong Heatmap - 14 hot new restaurants in Hong Kong


It's that time of year again! The second 2013 edition of the Eater Hong Kong Heatmap is out.

The number of restaurants in HK that have opened in the past few months has been astounding. I couldn't include them all in the Eater map. Aside from the ones on the Eater list, others worth noting are: Teppanroom (new teppanyaki room in the Grand Hyatt's Japanese restaurant Kaetsu), Ham & Sherry (Jason Atherton), Prune (new deli by the lovely Grassroots Pantry gals), 85 South (southern BBQ), The Bellbrook (Australian), Sushi Kado, Plat du Jour, La Vache, Zafran, Ginza Iwa, Upper Modern Bistro (ex-chef at St. George at Hullett House), The Boss (Cantonese), Little Burro, The Butcher's Club (butcher, private kitchen, dry-ageing specialists), Locofama, Pez, Opendoor Cafe and La Cantoche.

Eater Hong Kong Heatmap - round two!

I was very lucky to have been asked to submit my picks again to Eater for their Hong Kong Heatmap. If you missed the first one from January, it's here.

The main criterion was that they had to be new since the last round. In case you're surprised as to why there wasn't even a single ramen mention, despite there having been so many ramen openings, all I can say is that none of them seemed worthy of an international mention. If you want to contest that - well, that's what the comments box is for!

It's conveniently mapped and all, so get over there and have a look for what's on the list, and thanks for the having me Eater!

So funny that one of the first comments on Eater under that post was why Yardbird wasn't on that list - it was on the first heatmap, silly! Also shows how crazily (and internationally?) popular YB is!

Housekeeping - Eater Heatmap to Hong Kong, Flipboard & SCMP

Please forgive me for doing the blogger's equivalent of attaching "Excellent Work!" stickers to my primary school uniform. The past couple of months have been particularly exciting and I thought I'd share the joy and update you all on what's happening (a lot... too much, almost...!). Last week Eater asked me to come up with the first Eater Heatmap to Hong Kong, and a couple of months before that I became a "Cool Curator" on Flipboard*.

This blog is never going make me money, I do it because I love to eat and I love to share my experiences through (unedited) writing. It started that way, and it will always be that way, so in this ever-changing, increasingly-crowded world of digital media, to hear that people appreciate my rambles means a lot to me.

You'll also find me every Thursday in the Food & Wine section of the South China Morning Post where I have two columns, Take 5 and Legends, and occasionally write other features/stories.

Sorry if I sound like I just won the Oscars or something, but as I've finally eased into the fact that a new year has begun, it seemed appropriate to think about where I fit in the world and what I should be doing. Things are as messy and as exciting as the state of my desk (very) so please stay tuned, and thank you for reading. Hope you'll stick around.
